The Objective Of This Event Was To Create The Largest Music Festival In Africa To Date, Honoring The Centenary Of Nelson Mandela. The festival's model rewarded acts of civic engagement with tickets, using a point system to quantify "actions" taken by "Global Citizens." The brief called for a stadium-scale broadcast event that placed African voices and African artistry on a truly global stage. ● Section 02 / Approach ## Mandela 100 Event Strategy & Scale The festival aimed to raise awareness for crucial societal issues like poverty, health, and education. To incentivise action, a star-studded lineup of local and international artists and speakers was assembled. Mushroom Productions worked with a world-class team of local and international suppliers to create a seamless and impactful festival experience for a massive crew, artists, dignitaries, and tens of thousands of attendees. - 01 Artists included Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Cassper Nyovest, D'Banj, Usher, Ed Sheeran, Eddie Vedder, Femi Kuti, Pharrell Williams, Chris Martin, Sho Madjozi, Tiwa Savage, Wizkid, and Black Coffee. - 02 Speakers and ambassadors included Oprah, Sir Bob Geldof, Trevor Noah, Naomi Campbell, Dave Chappelle, Bonang Matheba, Nomzamo Mbatha, Gayle King, Tyler Perry, and Forest Whitaker. - 03 Designed and built a 60m × 30m stage at FNB Stadium for stadium-scale international broadcast. - 04 Built 6,000m² of backstage villages to host artists, dignitaries, broadcast partners and crew. - 05 Coordinated catering, hydration, cooling, fuel, infrastructure and technology across a 17-day site footprint. ● Section 03 / Outcome ## Global Citizen Mandela 100 Results - 01 Impact: The campaign generated over 5.6 million actions and commitments, which will ultimately affect the lives of around 121 million people. - 02 Funding: The Mandela 100 campaign raised over R104 billion (approximately $7.2 billion) in commitments. - 03 Historic Significance: African countries and leaders stood up to make their voices heard on the global stage, with major commitments toward the UN's Global Goals. - 04 Reach: The livestream garnered over 27 million views around the globe. - 05 Attendance: The event attracted over 70,000 Global Citizens to FNB Stadium. - 06 Notable Performances: Beyoncé's set included a new arrangement of "Halo" featuring the Soweto Gospel and Mzansi Youth Choir, and a duet with Ed Sheeran on "Perfect."
