# Dave, The Boy Who Played the Harp Tour, Recap From Pretoria and Cape Town

A production recap of the Dave tour at Sunbet Arena and Grand West Arena, from rigging and load-in to show day across two very different venues.

In March 2026, Dave announced that his critically acclaimed live show, The Boy Who Played the Harp Tour, was heading to South Africa. TimesLIVE reported the dates (https://www.timeslive.co.za/tshisa-live/2026-03-24-uk-rapper-dave-brings-the-boy-who-played-the-harp-to-south-africa/) as SunBet Arena at Time Square in Pretoria on 3 October and Grand Arena at GrandWest in Cape Town on 6 October. Dave is also the first UK rap artist to debut three consecutive studio albums at number one on the UK Albums Chart. Local music media (https://hypemagazine.co.za/2026/03/24/dave-is-officially-pulling-up-to-south-africa-in-2026/) greeted the news with real excitement.

That meant two arenas, two cities and three days between the shows. From a production standpoint, it also meant two different buildings. The single show had to look and sound the same in both. This is the concert production South Africa story that audiences rarely see. Here is the production side of the Dave tour across Pretoria and Cape Town.

## Two Arenas And One Production Standard

The central challenge of concert production South Africa on a two-city arena run is simple to state. The show has to be the same show. Fans in Pretoria buy the same experience as fans in Cape Town. The production cannot change when the venue does. What changes is how the team achieves it. That work starts with a detailed technical advance of each venue, long before a single truck is loaded.

SunBet Arena and Grand Arena are both indoor arenas, but they are different buildings. Their rigging infrastructure, load limits and access routes all differ. Understanding those differences, and planning for them precisely, keeps a tour on schedule across two cities in three days.

## SunBet Arena In Pretoria On 3 October

### The Venue At Time Square

SunBet Arena sits in the Menlyn Maine precinct in Waterkloof Glen, Pretoria. According to its Wikipedia entry (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SunBet_Arena), the arena holds 8,500 people for sporting events and seated concerts, and 10,000 for standing concerts. It also hosted the Basketball Africa League's Kalahari Conference in 2024, and we know the building well from our work on that production.

### Load-In And Build At SunBet Arena

On a show of this scale, load-in typically starts the day before and runs into show morning. Planning sequences the build so that each department can work without blocking another. Rigging comes first. Crews must calculate every flown element against the venue's rated load limits before anything else goes up. These elements include trusses, lighting rigs, speaker arrays and LED. That makes rigging a safety issue before it is a production issue.

### Show Day At SunBet Arena

Show day starts with the sound check. The touring audio team and the local crew run the full system. They check every input, every monitor feed and every front-of-house zone before doors open. For a show of this size, the process is methodical and often takes hours. It also frequently surfaces adjustments that crews must make before the audience arrives.

## Grand Arena At GrandWest In Cape Town On 6 October

### Moving The Production

Three days separate the Pretoria and Cape Town shows. In that window, a touring production handles bump-out, freight between cities, a venue advance, load-in, build, sound check and show day. The schedule is tight, but it is normal for touring crews. Moving a production this size between arenas without loss or damage to equipment takes real logistical discipline.

Grand Arena is a different building with its own technical characteristics.

### Load-In And Build At Grand Arena

The sequence matches Pretoria, with rigging first and then lighting, audio, LED and backline, but it adapts to the venue's own infrastructure. Every touring production carries a technical advance document that maps how the show fits each venue. The touring team and the local production company build that document together in the weeks before the tour arrives.

Local crew knowledge of rigging points, load limits, access routes and power infrastructure keeps the build efficient inside a tight window.

### Show Day At Grand Arena

The Cape Town show was the second and final South African date. According to the published tour schedule (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boy_Who_Played_the_Harp_Tour), the tour then moved on to Lagos on 16 and 17 October. Earlier legs covered Europe, North America and Australia.

A world-class touring show in a world-class arena depends on weeks of planning, a detailed technical advance and an experienced local crew. It also depends on communication protocols that make a complex production repeatable across venues.

## What Concert Production South Africa Demands Of A Touring Show

The Dave tour is a useful lens on what concert production South Africa really involves. It compresses every key challenge into a short, high-stakes window.

Venue knowledge comes first. Every arena has its own technical characteristics. A team without first-hand knowledge spends load-in time on discovery that it should spend on the build. Our Basketball Africa League work (https://mushroom.co.za/case-studies/basketball-africa-league-bal) at SunBet Arena shows how that knowledge speeds up every production there. You can explore the spaces we produce in on our venues (https://mushroom.co.za/venues) page.

Local crew depth comes second. A touring production arrives with a core team and adds local crew in each city. Riggers, audio technicians, lighting operators and stagehands determine how smoothly load-in runs and how well the show holds up. South Africa's depth of experienced crew in Johannesburg and Cape Town is one reason touring productions keep adding South African dates. Our services (https://mushroom.co.za/services) page explains what we bring to a touring production.

Logistics come third. Moving a production between cities takes freight management, vehicle coordination and operational discipline built through repetition. The road network between Gauteng and the Western Cape supports that movement, but it still demands planning and lead time.

The Dave tour put all three requirements to work across two cities in a single week. To see more of what we deliver at this level, browse our case studies (https://mushroom.co.za/case-studies).

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What Does Concert Production At A South African Arena Involve?

It covers the full technical build, including rigging, staging, audio, lighting, LED, backline, broadcast and streaming where required, local crew coordination and show calling. The process starts weeks before the show with a technical advance of the venue. It ends with bump-out and freight movement after the final curtain.

### How Does A Touring Production Adapt To Different Venues?

Every venue has its own rigging, load limits, power, access and floor plan. The team builds a technical advance for each one. It then identifies where the standard setup needs changes and plans them before load-in begins.

### Why Does Mushroom Productions Work With International Touring Productions?

We bring first-hand knowledge of major South African venues and crew networks in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Our production management also integrates with a touring team's existing systems and protocols.
